Piotr has got cinematography in his blood. He is the son of Piotr Sobocinski and the grandson of Witold Sobocinski, who graduated from Cinematographers Department at the Film School in Lodz. Since 2007 he has been making feature films and commercials as a director of photography.
Throughout his career up to date he has had the opportunity to cooperate with acclaimed Polish and foreign directors such as Jan Komasa, Wojciech Smarzowski, Łukasz Palkowski, Piotr Domalewski, Márta Mészáros and recently in Iceland with Ricky Rijnecke. Piotr is the cinematographer of several of the most important Polish films of the last decade, including "Corpus Christi", "Silent Night", "Hatred" and "Gods". In 2020 he received his 4th Golden Eagle Award and 2nd PSC Award for Jan Komasa’s feature "Corpus Christi". The film was nominated for the Academy Award in the category International Feature Film and won many awards at various international film festivals around the world, including Edipo Re Award and Label Europa Cinemas Awards at Venice Film Festival, 10 awards at Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, 3 awards at Minsk International Film Festival, 2 awards at El Gouna Film Festival and 2 awards at CinEast 2019 and many others. The year 2021 turned out to be successful for Piotr's work. He received two prestigious awards, both for Piotr Domalewski's films: the Eagle (Polish Film Award) for cinematography in "I never cry” and the award in Polish Films Competition at EnergaCamerimage Festival for cinematography in "Operation Hyacinth”. In 2022 Piotrek continued his success, winning another award from the Polish Society of Cinematographers (PSC) for the cinematography in "Operation Hyacinth".
When it comes to creating images nothing is impossible for him - the more challenging production, the better. Tirelessly and with full determination he seeks the best possible light and form of expression to tell a story. As a cinematographer, he is interested in projects that are not mere entertainment, but rather a chance to go beyond and upgrade the skills. He is appreciated by critics not only for his technical efficiency, but also for the artistic and humanistic sensitivity. "Good cinematography is the one that don’t come out ahead of the story it tells", he says.
Member of the Motion Picture Academy (AMPAS), European Film Academy (EFA), Polish Film Academy and Polish Society of Cinematographers (PSC).
